I Grew a Beard

The BeardI never liked beards. They are itchy and because beard hairs are coarse and I have sensitive skin they hurt. But Michel likes beards and has been bugging me to grow a goatee. While she was in the hospital I couldn't really whine that the beard hurt too much especially with her head looking like a carved Thanksgiving turkey. So I broke down and grew a goatee for her. I'm not sure I like it because it is itchy and it is irritating my skin so if anyone knows something that will either soften up the beard or toughen up my skin, pleae let me know. Anyway, the goatee is staying because one of my co-workers told me it makes me look younger. You can compare the "Hairy Tom" to the clean-shaven Tom and let me know what you think.

Hi Tom,

The beard looks itchy to me, but it does make you look younger. Tough decision.

I like both, though with beards I prefer the non-goatee type, provided they're kept short. But there's no denying it. Either way you're a well-kempt fellow.

If you're wondering where I've been, the most recent post at the deblog will explain my computer nightmares. But where, you say, is the deblog? New address: http://www.the-deblog.com.

Hm. how about something that softens the beard & skin?

I have a goatee myself. My skin gets quite dry up here in the Canadian winters (-40c this week), so during this time of year I add an extra step to the morning bathroom routine. Just after teeth brushing and just before hair pasting I do the "lather your face with Aloe Vera lotion", which of course, gets the beard as well. I've noticed the hair is quite a bit softer, but maybe it just *feels* that way to my hands, because of course, my face has long since gotten used to summer-time regular coarse hair. But you might try it anyways.

Having had facial hair most of my life, I think the key is living through that 3-6 week period until the hairs get long enough to stop constantly poking you. The two times I've removed my mustache (since 1977), my wife has just looked at me and laughed, until it has grown back. Demoralizing, to say the least. Thinking of losing my goatee, but Emma likes it too much.

The "goatee" suits you Tom.

When you wrote clean-shaven Tom I expected you'd gone for the whole caboodle and shaved that head of hair off.

[Sigh] Guess the beard was really to detract Michel from keeping the "Buddhist abess" look. ;)

JJ says...Compromise. Keep the mustache and shave off the goatee. End of the itchies!

After a short while the itchiness went away. I try to keep it fairly short and tightly trimmed.
