The religion of peace

I hate to say I told you so but... The West and it's belief in justice, freedom, and equality is at war with Islam which believes in injustice, death, and destruction. Fortunately the only people getting killed so far are the rioters. Update: A Catholic priest was murdered in Turkey

The cartoons can be seen at Human Events Online.

Think hard about this... Iran possessing nuclear weapons!

A selection of signs from the protests: "Freedom Go to Hell"; "Be Prepared for the Real Holocaust"; "Europe, You Will Pay; Your 9/11 Is on Its Way"; "Behead Those Who Insult Islam"; "Butcher Those Who Mock Islam"; "Exterminate Those Who Slander Islam"; "Annihilate Those Who Insult Islam"; "As Muslims We Unite & Are Prepared to Fight"; "This Is the Beginning of the End for You Disbelievers."

See Michelle Malkin for more.

Update: I was reading the Sunday NY Times Book Review section when I came across this little gem from someone by the name of Lucy Ellmann (apparently a novelist) in a review of a book, The Thin Place by Kathyrn Davis: "I should declare immediately that I resent and fear Christinaity, not only for its sexism and incitement of violence but for its deadening effect on the imagination." OK, so the religion that led to the modern day world of freedom and justice is "feared and resented"? Apparently Ms. Ellmann is an idiot. If she is looking for a religion to fear and resent she should look at the ruins at the south end of Manhattan or try reading a newspaper (but not the NY Times which has refused to publish the cartoons).

Update: This was in the NY Times editorial section: "The New York Times and much of the rest of the nation's news media have reported on the cartoons but refrained from showing them. That seems a reasonable choice for news organizations that usually refrain from gratuitous assaults on religious symbols, especially since the cartoons are so easy to describe in words." Let's be clear about what hog-wash this is... the NY Times had no trouble with publishing pictures of the painting of the Virgin Mary with elephant dung on her even though most Catholics saw the painting as a "gratuitous assaults on religious symbols". This is about cowardice and the NY Times has demonstrated that it has plenty of that.

So … ?

As much as I love you Tom I wonder what you thought of the USSR when it definitely possesed nuclear weapons and was considered an evil country. Maybe I wonder so hard because I love you. :D People in other countries aren’t lunatics, and they might worry about YOU just as hard as you worry about them. US has so much more nuclear weapons and it actually proved that it wouldn’t think twice about *using* it. Still wonder why other want their own bomb?

What I thought about the USSR was that its leaders were rational men whose goal may have been world domination but were intelligent enough not to strap bombs around themselves on step on a crowded subway. Unfortunately the madmen who lead Iran support suicide bombings of civilians.

As far as the US using nuclear weapons, I wonder why you think the US did not think twice about using them. In fact, it was a difficult decision and was done only because no other way was seen to end the war and prevent the deaths of more than a million Americans and Japanese. The US had experienced kamikazes and suicidal banzai charges and knew that only a profound attack could have ended the war in 1945. Since the war, the US has had the bomb for 60 years and yet hasn't used it on anyone, not even in Korea or Vietnam when we were fighting real wars.

As to your question, I don't wonder why Iran wants a bomb. I only wonder if they get it will they use it on Israel or the US first.

It's not only me, it's the whole Russian culture. The prevailing opinion is that Americans dropped the bomb *after* the war, and who honestly can blame them? The Russian POV is that the Americans just had to test their new toy so they chosed Japan. Poor Japan. The lesson: we beter get our own bombs *before* the USA decides we are an Ok target for "preventing the deaths of a couple of Americans" ;)

You can ask the Chinese if they thought the war was over in August of 1945. In any case, I would hope that being a smart person that you would not follow "prevailing opinion".

There was a poll in Russia, they asked people when the WWII ended. As I could understand, *nobody* had the corect answer. Everybody said "May 9th" = that's the Official End of The War for the Soviet Union. Nevermind my granfather had to serve the whole year longer. May 9th is a Big Holiday in Russia. And it's a real one. Even medically-prohibited-from-drinking drink on his day.

I used a cliché. That’s how the Russian see you (us??????), and I am pretty sure about this.

I do not, and it hurts.

There's a lot to be said here, maybe more, later. WWII in the Pacific was brutality personified. Like the current war we're fighting, we were fighting an enemy that did not conform to the established standards for both warfare, as well as the treatment of prisoners and conquered civilians. Their civilians were preparing to fight to the last man. And I recently learned that we'd already killed more Japanese with incendiary bombs in the days leading up to Hiroshima and Nagasaki than were killed there. I'm not saying that the war was necessarily less brutal in Europe, but the atrocities were of a more "conventional" (shudder) nature. We were not testing a toy, we were trying to save American lives. It accomplished that goal.
I may comment on the current situation, later, if I can.
